Following on from last year’s Queen’s Award for Enterprise success, the team at Robert Welch Designs are delighted to have been awarded a second successive Queen’s Award, this time in the Innovation category.

The award is in recognition of the unique integrated sharpening and storage capabilities incorporated into the Signature Knife Block Set, which has resulted in the Signature range making a significant and increasing contribution to the company’s continued growth.

To be part of an elite group of Queen’s Award for Enterprise winners is a real honour for all at Robert Welch, especially after receiving the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2016.

Design Director, Paul deBretton Gordon expressed the sense of pride for all the company: “As a brand we had been predominantly known for our cutlery products, so developing a knife storage solution together with integrated sharpening options, presented a substantial challenge to the business. Equally, we recognised a significant gap in the market versus traditional wooden knife blocks. This is what the Innovation Award really stands for. It underscores the whole DNA of the company and just how much care is taken in designing and developing products that are not just aesthetically appealing, but can also provide greatly improved functionality.”

“This award especially recognises the hugely talented team here at Robert Welch - and to be part of an elite group of Queen’s Award winners for a second year running is a real honour and brings a sense of pride to everyone involved.”

Every knife in the Signature knife range is fully forged from a single piece of stainless steel, which runs from blade tip to the handle head (a ‘full tang’), to ensure maximum strength, durability and balance. It also means that each knife can be sharpened at home for ease and convenience, with the Signature ceramic sharpening wheel.

In 2008, the design for the Queen’s award-winning Signature Knife Block Set was conceived; a unique storage block, with sharpener and integrated magnets. Powerful Neodymium magnets protect the knives’ fine cutting edge by suspending them in six individual slots and a replaceable integrated sharpener encourages regular and easy knife sharpening at home, ensuring a safe and sharp blade edge at all times.

The Queen’s Award for Enterprise will be presented to the team at Robert Welch by the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire later in the year.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you, our loyal customers, for your continued support!
